What to Bring to Your Bridal Appointment: A Bride’s Guide

Your bridal appointment is one of those wedding-planning moments that suddenly makes everything feel real.
You may have spent months saving inspiration, thinking about silhouettes, scrolling through wedding dresses and imagining what you might wear down the aisle. But when you finally step into a bridal boutique and begin trying on gowns, something changes.
The good news? You really don’t need to bring very much.
In fact, after years of dressing brides, we’ve found that the most important things you bring to your bridal appointment probably aren’t things at all.
What Should You Bring Wedding Dress Shopping?
For most bridal appointments, we recommend bringing:
Nude or seamless undergarments
Shoes only if you already have a specific pair or heel height in mind
A few inspiration photos
Any meaningful accessory you know you want to wear
The people whose opinions truly matter to you
An open mind
You do not need to arrive with special shapewear, the perfect bridal shoes, a strapless bra or an entire Pinterest board organized by silhouette.
Your stylist should be able to help you discover what works.
And sometimes, what works is completely different from what you expected.
Bring Inspiration - But Don't Let It Become a Rulebook
We love when a bride comes in with inspiration.
A handful of saved gowns can tell your stylist quite a bit—not only about the dresses you like, but about the feeling you're trying to create.
Maybe everything you've saved has a clean, architectural quality. Maybe you're drawn to romantic lace, dramatic basque waists or soft, flowing skirts. Maybe you haven't noticed the common thread at all, but your stylist does.
That's helpful.
What becomes less helpful is feeling as though you must find the exact dress you've imagined.
We can't tell you how many times a bride has walked through our doors absolutely certain she doesn't want something—strapless, fitted, lace, ballgown—and ultimately fallen in love with exactly that.
Use your inspiration to begin the conversation, not to limit it.
What Undergarments Should You Wear to a Bridal Appointment?
Keep it simple.
Nude, seamless underwear is generally your best choice. If you feel more comfortable wearing shapewear, you're certainly welcome to, but you don't need to purchase it specifically for your appointment.
And despite what many bridal shopping checklists tell you, you usually don't need a strapless bra.
Many wedding gowns have structure and support built directly into the bodice, and depending on the dress, wearing a bra underneath can actually interfere with the way the gown is designed to fit.
Come comfortable. We'll take it from there.
Do You Need to Bring Wedding Shoes?
Not necessarily.
If you've already chosen your wedding shoes or know that wearing a particular heel height is important to you bring them.
Otherwise, don't worry about buying shoes before shopping for your gown.
Your wedding dress will ultimately help determine what shoe makes sense, not the other way around.
The Most Important Thing to Bring? The Right People.

This one matters.
Who you bring to your bridal appointment can have an enormous impact on how the experience feels.
More people do not necessarily mean more support.
Every additional person brings another opinion, another preference and another idea of what they think your wedding dress should look like.
The best guests are the people who understand that their role isn't to choose your dress.
It's to help you recognize when you've found yours.
Bring the people who know you well, make you feel confident and can offer an opinion without overpowering your own.
Sometimes that's Mom and your sister.
Sometimes it's your maid of honor.
Sometimes it's one person.
And sometimes a bride shops best on her own.
There is no correct number.
What You Don't Need to Bring
You don't need to bring a perfectly styled version of yourself.
You don't need bridal hair and makeup. You don't need a spray tan. You don't need to be at your “wedding weight.”
And you certainly don't need to apologize for your body.
Wedding gowns are very different from everyday clothing. The construction, proportions, fabrics and silhouettes can completely change the way you see yourself.
Give yourself permission to experience that without picking yourself apart.
Bring an Open Mind
This might be Amanda's favorite piece of advice.
The bride who walks in saying, “I'll try anything,” often has one of the most enjoyable appointments.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't know what you like.
It means allowing yourself to be surprised.
A great bridal stylist isn't simply pulling dresses from a rack. She's watching your reaction. She's noticing what makes you stand differently, what you keep touching, what you immediately want taken off—and what makes you suddenly become very quiet when you see yourself in the mirror.
Sometimes your dream dress is exactly what you pictured.
Sometimes it's the gown you never would have chosen from the hanger.
Both are wonderful ways to find it.
Amanda's Advice: Don't Prepare So Much That You Forget to Experience It
There is so much information available to brides now that wedding dress shopping can begin to feel like something you need to study for.
You don't.
After more than two decades working with brides, one thing I know for certain is that choosing a wedding gown is both practical and emotional.
Yes, we will talk about your venue, wedding date, budget, silhouettes, fabrics and alterations.
But we're also paying attention to something much simpler:
How do you feel in the dress?
My advice is to prepare enough that you feel comfortable - and then give yourself permission to enjoy what happens next.
You may be surprised by how quickly you know.
XOXO - Amanda

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to a bridal appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that's easy to change out of and nude or seamless underwear. You generally don't need to bring a special bra or shapewear unless wearing it makes you more comfortable.
Should I wear makeup to try on wedding dresses?
You can, but it's certainly not required. Come however you feel most comfortable and most like yourself.
Do I need to bring heels wedding dress shopping?
No. If you already own the shoes you're considering for your wedding, you're welcome to bring them, but purchasing wedding shoes before choosing your gown isn't necessary.
How many people should I bring to my bridal appointment?
There isn't a perfect number. Bring the people whose opinions you trust and who will support your preferences rather than impose their own. A smaller group often makes it easier for a bride to hear her own instincts.
Should I bring wedding dress inspiration photos?
Yes. A few saved images can help your stylist understand your aesthetic, but don't feel limited by them. Some of the best bridal moments happen when a bride tries something she never expected to love.
